What is online counseling?

Online counseling (also known as telemental health or distance counseling) is any type of therapy that is provided via technology rather than in-person, such as a traditional clinic or office setting. The therapeutic approach is the same - it’s simply a different mode of delivery!

Since counseling licenses are state-specific, I can only conduct telehealth sessions with clients who are physically located within the state where I’m licensed (Virginia).

Does online counseling work?

Yes! Numerous studies have shown that online counseling can be equally effective as in-office sessions for treating many types of issues. Talking to a counselor over video (similar to Skype or Facetime, but on a private, secure platform) offers a very similar feel to a traditional therapy session, but with the added benefit of increased convenience and accessibility.

Is online counseling the best option for me?

It depends on what issues you need to work on and your current emotional state. If you’re experiencing a mental health crisis or are feeling suicidal, you should contact local emergency services or speak with a mental health professional in person. Online therapy is also not recommended for clients dealing with active psychosis. I feel that online services are best suited for clients who are experiencing low to medium levels of emotional distress. If you’re in a period of acute concern or crisis, it is easier to ensure your safety and provide immediate support with in-person therapy. I would be happy to help you locate an appropriate provider in your area if this is the case.

If you are feeling suicidal or experiencing a mental health crisis, please call 911 or find your local mental health emergency services by Googling “(your town) crisis hotline.”

What’s the advantage of online counseling?

The primary advantage is flexibility! With no commute time and the option of attending sessions at home, at your office, or even while sitting in a parking lot, online counseling is simple to fit into your schedule. For example, online counseling is a great option for new moms who might otherwise not be able to attend sessions due to lack of childcare, a breastfeeding infant at home, or lack of energy to put on pants and drive somewhere (no judgment - I’ve been there).
